For over 30 years NHSJ a non-profit organization has been teaching homeowners how to maintain their properties to promote safety and prevent future costly repairs. The NHSJ Home Maintenance Training Program provides its participants with knowledge and skills to protect their homes and save them money; homeowners are thought how to make basic repairs involving plumbing, installations of window, door, toilet, hardwood and parquet flooring, as well as faucets, washers, etc. We offer a beginning, intermediate and an advance class taught by a qualified instructor, coupled with environmental workshops on mold and mildew from the Housing and Preservation Department (HPD).

The need for Home Maintenance Training was realized and achieved as result of the following:

A single mother of three children received a $7,500 home improvement loan from NHS for kitchen renovation. As is the rule with NHSJ, we perform inspections before payouts to contractors. During the final inspection of the property, the NHSJ Construction Manager found that the homeowner had scorched the Formica counter top with a hot pot; we recognized the need for the educational arm of home repair and maintenance. It is now 30 years since the board of directors and staff of NHS of Jamaica rolled out a comprehensive program with goals/objects, guidelines, standards and outcome to address this vital need.

Since 1976, NHS of Jamaica has educated more than 3,860 residents on home maintenance training; as a result,

• Residents have learned how to select, use, care for properly use and store tools
• Homeowners have learned how to identify home repairs problems and prescribe cures before they become major issues.
• Homeowners are saving dollars by making make basic repairs themselves

• Some residents have upgraded their employment status as result of the class.

The agency is committed to revitalizing neighborhoods through education, counseling and financial services to enhance people’s ability to access affordable housing in Southern Queens.
