Board of Directors

NHS of Jamaica is governed by a unique partnership of volunteers who give their time and expertise to the organization and the community.  The Board of Directors is made up of 13 volunteers, representing local government agencies, businesses, lending institutions, and community residents.  Fifty percent of the board members are residents of the local community, and three quarters have served the organization for a period of five years or longer.  The board has regular meetings once a month, and board/staff workshops are held several times a year.

The Board Finance Committee has oversight responsibility to ensure that financial decisions are prudent and based on adequate information.  This committee reviews significant financial decisions and monitors financial reports and budgets on a routine basis. The Board of Directors engages the services of an independent auditor to audit the year-end financial statements of the organization and express an opinion on those financial statements.  The audit and management letters issued by the auditors will be given to the Board for their acceptance.

Board Meetings are routinely recorded in minute format and signed by the Secretary of the Board.  These minutes serve as the on-going record of the agency’s goal-setting, planning, and monitoring and evaluation of the organization’s performance.  The Board and agency management routinely receive accurate information regarding financial performance, program operation, development activities, and external factors that may impact operations, so that timely action may be taken to assure goal attainment.
